Welcome to the new Art 9/10 home page. This will be your resource site for course material and handouts.

The theme this year will be ‘Personalized Art’. I want you to be present in your work, your beliefs, attitudes, passions and loves . This is not to say that Art for the sake of beauty or esthetic is not important. We’re just going to use our God given talents to share who you are with those around us. This should make the class easy because no one knows you better than you, however its challenging to have the confidence to put yourself out for the world to see.

Art 9/10 Course Outline 2013

We will be dividing up our year into four components

1. History and Background

3. Free Form and Sculpture

4. Final Fusion Project

This year we will be approaching our course from a Personalized Artistic perspective. We will look at several Artist’s who’s work has been exceedingly influential on today’s Art world. You will be expected to create a small research project on an artist.

We will also examine the basic principles of Art and Design, learn to collaborate on projects and create a final project which demonstrates your overall understanding of the techniques, concepts and styles discussed throughout the year.

Principles of Art include: Line, Shape, Texture, Form, Space, Value and Colour.

For our painting component you will complete a large group mural as well as an individual project.

Our free form/sculpture component will look at more abstract works with an emphasis on remixing old and new.

The fusion project is the final piece of your assessment. It will challenge you to try new things and combines all elements discussed in class.

Assessment:

40% Art projects

20% Participation and work ethic

Project 2: Favorite book and passage.

This project is about you drawing inspiration from personally important sources. You must choose a passage from your favorite work of literature. The goal is to use the text to create a visual piece of art, taking the intangible and making it real. Illustrators, producers and artist do this all the time. Use what you love to inspire something else. You may use any media you wish and can work any size as well. Please consult me before moving on with your project though.

ASSESSMENT:

10 marks: Quality of work produced. Did you do your best work? It may not be the most

10 marks: Written description of your thought process, explain how your work was created. Also include a copy of the texts that inspired you.

10 marks: Creativity. Did you create something different than you normally do, is it a unique take on the written work. Did it challenge you?

Part 2: Artist Re-creation Project: Twisted

Once you have selected your artist of choice and critiqued their work, it is time to begin the creative process. You will be asked to create a relatively large work which represents the Artists style, HOWEVER you will be remaking your favorite movie, book or video game cover in the artist’s style as opposed to simply a recreation.

  1. Style: Does the work represent the artists style?                                     /5
  2. Colour/media: Does your work use similar colours/media?               /5
  3. Content: Does it reflect a similar content to the Artists?                      /5
  4. Cover Content: Did you still sell the media itself?                                  /5
  5. Overall appeal: Did you put forth your best effort?                               /10

You may use paints, pastels, ink, paper or other. I will be working with you individually to improve your skills with the media chosen.

You will also then have a peer critique your work similar to the critique you did for your artist. This is designed to encourage conversations about art, and build self confidence in your abilities. You will be asked for 2 positives and 1 upgrade. You will be given the critique form soon.

FINAL ART FUSION PROJECT:

ART FUSION Final Project

FUSION!

For your final project you will be creating something that will challenge you and go beyond your current creative work. It must include a number of different elements that we have not explored yet.

10 Marks: Cultural/Historical Element: Research a different culture/time period that you have yet to explore. This may be Asian, European, African, Modern, Renaissance, First Nations etc. Your possibilities are endless!

Combine your historical choice with your current style.

10 Marks: Mutli-Dimensional: Get off the paper, or canvas and explore space. In addition to a flat surface, you must include elements that give depth and dimension to your work. You must have more than one ‘surface’ in your work. This may include, wood, ceramic, paper mache, metal,  jewelry or natural elements.

10 Marks: Digital Element: Technology is all around us and we’d be crazy not to utilize it! From digital photography, to photocopying, printing, or editing you must incorporate the use of technology to enhance or project.

10 Marks: Execution: How well did you pull it all together? Is everything complete and has the appearance of cohesiveness? Does it all work?

/50 Marks total plus + Class Critique. You will be sharing your work with the class and we will have group assessment of your work. We will discuss this further towards the final week.

For this class we will be spending time generating ideas. You must collect a minimum of 10 inspirational images, as well as any additional written information that you may find helpful.

*** Final thoughts. Be aware of he size of your work. Challenge yourself by working on a larger scale than you normally feel comfortable with.
