MS ART: BioArt Semester 1

House Keeping: if you want to reach me the best way to do so is through email, j.patience@ncsnanaimo.com

Theme: This year our theme will be the Art of Biology. Everywhere we look in creation we can find design and beauty. So for the first half of this semester we will be looking at the smallest and biggest things in existence and their design. Each unit will be roughly 4 weeks (Classes) in length. Our pattern will be week 1 introduction, sketching and planning. Week 2-3 work blocks. Week 4 Sharing and critique.

Unit 1: Patterns in Nature. Everywhere we look we see God’s creativity and design. Our first Unit looks at everything from camouflage, and bio-mimickery to complex pattterns and colour changers.

Unit 2: Whatiphants? Sometimes I think God asked himself…”What if I put a duck and a beaver together?” And then he made a platypus. For this unit you’ll be combining your favorite animals into unique and crazy hybrids. We’ll also look at the combination of Nature + Urban for project on environmental social isssues.

Unit 3: Natures Tools: This unit will be more about the tools we use than the images we produce. We’ll experiment with unique canvases and writing instruments

Unit 4: Small Scale Creation: From atoms and cells to grains of sand. There are so many unexpected designs in the miniature.

Unit 5: BIG Things: Imagine if we truly understood the scale of God? How Big he must truly be to create a universe! This last unit looks at things that are big, Galaxies, our solar system and of course planets. The beauty of everything outside of our atmosphere is amazing. Lets take some time to appreciate it.

Day 1 work: Portfolio construction. Like the years past, we’ll be creating a portfolio to store your work. Because our theme this year is Biology based. I’ll be looking for your inspiration to come from creation!

Speaking of inspiration, here’s some for you.
